Last week was the Golden Globes, and though I rarely watch award ceremonies, I will always snoop on everyone’s outfits and make my own silent judgments about them… don’t we all?
If these books were adapted into a movie, who would I cast as the main characters, and what would their spotlight outfit look like? Some of these may make sense, some may not - this is just for fun! Enjoy, and let us know in the comments which ones you agree with, and which ones you don’t!
Annie Bot by Sierra Greer
Annie Bot is an artificially intelligent manmade robot created to be the perfect girlfriend. While its owner, Doug, finds the ideal setting for his new toy, he tells her that he loves Annie’s AI, which makes her seem more like a real woman. In an effort to please Doug, Annie starts to explore the things that make a woman “real” and learns that becoming more human also means becoming less perfect. As their relationship becomes more intricate and complicated, Annie asks more complex questions.
Emma Stone could perfectly embody the character of Annie. Isn’t this red dress the perfect symbol of revenge, confidence, and anger?
Weyward by Emilia Hart
We follow three women with common ancestry across five centuries who fight individual battles towards freedom. Each woman is linked by their connection to nature and their determination to reclaim their power. The book weaves themes of independence, the strength of women, and the enduring magic of the natural world.
This caped dress worn by Heidi Klum with its pleated finish already has a witchy look, but the color and cut-outs perfectly resemble the nature and strength of the characters portrayed in Weyward.
The Luminaries by Eleanor Catton
On a stormy night in 1866, amid New Zealand’s booming gold rush, Walter Moody stumbles across a room of 12 local men who have met in secret to discuss a series of mysterious occurrences. Moody sets on solving these seemingly inexplicable events while being pushed into an atmosphere based on fate, fortune, and stars.
If I could cast Walter Moody in a modern-day version of The Luminaries, I am not sure if my first thought would be Ayo Edebiri… but in this Loewe look, I see it. The gold feather tie pays the perfect tribute to this gold-obsessed story. You can listen to our episode about this book on The Novel Tea podcast here.
Circe by Madeline Miller
Circe is a retelling of Greek mythology stories from the perspective of an exiled but powerful woman and her encounters with some of the most famous figures in all mythology such as Hermes, Minotaur, Odysseus, and his son Telemachus.
I would love to see this movie adapted onto a screen and see Zendaya as a vengeful, emotional, and powerful witch. The dress, the jewelry, the hair - everything is screaming with goddess energy.
The Heiress by Rachel Hawkins
Camden and Jules are happy living together as husband and wife, despite their unwillingness to open up about their pasts. When Camden is called back to his previous life, and is forced to be reunited with his estranged family, Jules is happy for the opportunity to learn more about him and where he grew up. As their stay in Camden’s family home grows longer, they both must learn to navigate through their loyalty and trust and redefine their relationship in ways they did not expect.
Everything about Rachel Brosnahan’s outfit says money, wealth, confidence, and richness. With the deep colors of her dress and jewelry, and metallic Jimmy Choo pumps, who wouldn’t be jealous of her stature and beauty? There is a scene in The Heiress where Jules encompasses the look of the former heiress of the household by borrowing an old dress, and this is exactly how I pictured her.
The Glass Hotel by Emily St. John Mandel
Vincent is working as a bartender at a remote luxury hotel when she meets the wealthy and cunning Jonathon Alkaitis and she enters a world of opulence and grandeur. Vincent adapts to her new role, living in high-end homes and traveling in elite circles, but her mind always takes her back to her old life at The Glass Hotel.
We already know that Nicole Kidman is more than capable of playing the role of a damaged, and hurting trophy wife who must keep her spirits up for the public (Big Little Lies, Just Go With It, etc), her glass-like dress with its sweeping train and falling water-esque embodiment is a perfect representation of the The Glass Hotel itself.
The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern
Celia and Marco are two young magicians who are fated to a lifelong duel by their masters. Their competition takes place within a traveling circus that only operates at night. Here, they both create extraordinary displays of magic and unexpectedly fall in love, complicating the contest.
This black number with its silver embroidery and unique silhouette is an amazing choice for a magic performer. The pointed frill gives a sense of brutality and strength, and the shiny finish and embellishments represent the soft and romantic side of this story.
Piranesi by Susanna Clarke
Piranesi, lives alone in this strange, otherworldly place, documenting his observations and exploring its many chambers. He believes the world is all there is, until he uncovers cryptic clues and realizes there may be more to his existence.
After seeing Timothee Chalamet in Wonka, he is more than capable of embodying the childish and playful energy of Piranesi in a way that brings magic to this other-worldly story. You can listen to our episode where we discuss the book in its totality here.
